Thailand's best kept secret

Stop the press! Off-the-beaten-track travel is alive and well in Thailand, and Koh Chang is living proof.
One of the country’s least developed islands, this emerald gem teems with lush rainforest, craggy peaks and dreamy stretches of white sand. In fact, it’s so rugged that even McDonald’s hasn’t dared to plant its golden arches here. The result? A refreshing throwback to the Thailand of 15 years ago, where beaches still feel local, and your biggest decision is which fresh seafood dish to order next.
Sure, the so-called ‘Lonely Beach’ can get a little social nowadays, but drift further south and you’ll stumble upon mellow coastal villages where life slows down to a blissful trickle. Think rustic homes, a handful of restaurants, and shimmering golden sand underfoot. Stress? Don’t know her. On Koh Chang, pure relaxation is the only item on your itinerary.

If your idea of paradise means swaying hammocks and fresh coconuts, or chasing waterfalls and diving off a wild coastline, Koh Chang is calling your name.
It’s all about accessible wilderness on this unspoilt island: think lush rainforests, secret coves, and an irresistible laid-back vibe. November to March is prime time to visit for balmy days and brilliant sunshine (monsoon downpours can get dramatic out here).
Most travellers hop on a quick flight from Bangkok to Trat, then ferry to Koh Chang in around 20–45 minutes. Once you dock, a quick taxi or shuttle ride lands you at your resort. Fancy a champagne arrival? Certain five-star stays even whisk guests over from Trat by speedboat (weather permitting).
If you prefer going low-key, basic beach huts with shared facilities serve up just the right amount of off-grid charm. Either way, Koh Chang feels refreshingly like the Thailand of old—peaceful, pristine, and begging you to slow down and settle in. The hardest choice you’ll make is which slice of white sand to stretch out on next.
Our favourite things to see and do around Koh Chang
1. White Sands Beach night market. The streets are fringed with pop-up stalls, and the delicious Thai street food is a no-brainer.
2. Kai Bae Waterfall. A relatively easy 10-minute hike leads to a secluded and peaceful waterfall.
3. Lonely Beach. Fun and cheerful, the beach is great and everyone’s out for a good time. For relaxation, try a sea-fronting yoga class.
4. Band Bao. Soak up the small local vibe of a traditional fisherman’s village. Walk the pier, unwind on the beach, eat fresh seafood and book a snorkelling trip.
5. Hat Sai Noi Beach. Head to a massage hut for a Thai massage. If you’re a little pink from the sun, ask for an aloe vera massage.
