Curated by our Thailand specialists, who are bursting with fun ideas and local know-how, this is your passport to an exceptional Thai escape. Get the lowdown on top hot spots, can’t-miss experiences, and dreamy places to stay, all wrapped up in insider tips to make planning a breeze.

1. Why holiday in Thailand?

Picture stepping into balmy tropical air, your tastebuds tingling at the scent of sizzling satay and zesty tom yum. It’s not like your typical Pacific Islands getaway... Thailand is a world of its own, brimming with vibrant culture, intriguing heritage, and a slew of postcard-perfect beaches. And the best bit? You’ll find incredible bang for your baht, whether you’re floating down Bangkok’s canals, sunbathing in Phuket, or unwinding on Koh Samui.

Pack your appetite for adventure (and spicy street food!) because Thailand is ready to dazzle you at every turn. Treat yourself to a well-deserved, delightfully different escape. We promise you’ll come home with new stories, new flavours, and a longing to return for more.

2. For total relaxation, where do Kiwis prefer to stay?

As Kiwis, we’re all about that glorious mix of sun, sand and soul-soothing vibes. That’s why you’ll find us unwinding in beachy havens like Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi (to name just a few). Think coconut palms swaying in the breeze, warm sands underfoot, and laid-back local charm by the bucketful. Pack your jandals and a healthy appetite for relaxation because these Thai treasures are just the ticket when you want to switch off and soak up a blissful dose of tropical paradise.

3. How can I choose which island is best for me?

Ask yourself: do you see yourself in a larger resort, overflowing with amenities and an energetic atmosphere right on your doorstep? Or would you rather slow things down and slip into that dreamy, unhurried island buzz you’ll find on smaller gems like Koh Samui?

There are even intimate offshore retreats offering five-star luxury if you’re keen to really treat yourself. Think about what sort of holiday vibe speaks to you, then chat through the details with our House of Travel consultants. We’ll help you match the perfect island to your perfect getaway.

GETTING THERE

There are a range of airlines flying out of Auckland to Thailand — either via Bangkok to the islands or via other Asia gateways, depending on the airline. Flight times range from 12 to 14 hours including your transit time.

WHEN TO GO

The weather is warm year-round! Monsoon season (the rainy season) can vary: It officially runs from June until October. But in the south, rains can last until late November.

VISAS

No visa is required for a tourist stay up to 90 days, but it’s good to check with your consultant. It’s always a good idea to have a printed itinerary with proof of accommodation and return flights with you.

4. What makes it so great for families?

When Thailand’s tourism scene exploded a few decades ago, it left a legacy of ultra-welcoming, family-focused fun. Think massive kids’ clubs, splash-happy water parks (yes—right inside some resorts!), and activities to keep every age grinning from dawn ‘til dusk. Chat to your House of Travel consultant about the best spots for your brood, from toddler-friendly playgrounds to tween and teen hangouts, so everyone can have a holiday they’ll rave about. No bored kids = total holiday bliss!

5. Why do couples rave about it?

In a word: variety! With fierce competition among resorts, Thailand serves up exceptional value and romance in equal measure. Couples adore the easy-breezy tranquillity of island life... soft sand, crystal waters, and a backdrop of vibrant local culture. Evenings can be as laid-back or lively as you fancy: snuggle down for a quiet dinner or hit the local bars for a night to remember. And the best part? Our House of Travel specialists know just where to send you for the ultimate loved-up escape.

GETTING AROUND

We recommend regional flights for travelling between Bangkok and the islands. Smaller islands are easily accessed by boat transfer.

HEALTH

It's safest to drink bottled water here.

6. What type of accommodation is there?

Resorts. There are a huge array of resorts available. From budget to blow out. Have a chat with one of our consultants and they will help narrow down your search.

Huts. There are fewer huts than you might imagine. These were once the epitome of a Thailand beach break, but are now quite commercialised. However, we can still help find you find that genuine experience.

Unusual. Unique getaways still exist. Ask us about wellness retreats at the Kamalaya resort in Koh Samui, or intrepid temple stays with monks.

Deal-tastic. The deals in Thailand are competitive all year round. Some properties have bonus night offers where you get free nights if you stay longer... Travelling for your honeymoon or a special occasion? Don't forget to tell us so we can tell the resort as well.

7. What are the must-dos?

Between breezy beach days and those blissfully cheap massages, it’s hard to imagine pulling yourself away. But beyond the temples and night markets lies a real gem - Chiang Mai (Thailand’s former capital). Bursting with history, it serves up some of the spiciest cuisine around, guaranteed to blow your taste buds (and socks) off. So add an extra helping of adventure to your tropical escape and savour all that fiery northern charm!

8. Bangkok sounds rowdy. Is it just for backpackers? And how can I avoid that?

Bangkok might have a bit of a wild reputation, especially around Patpong’s “entertainment district”, but don’t let the neon lights fool you. Dig a little deeper and you’ll uncover a fascinating city of historic landmarks and graceful temples that are well worth exploring. Foodies, get excited: Bangkok’s bursting with delicious eats from bustling hawker stalls to swanky rooftop bars (Vertigo at the Banyan Tree Hotel is a top pick). Surprisingly, this metropolitan giant has its fair share of greenery too, like Lumphini Park’s 142 acres of serene lakes and boat rentals.

If you’re keen to dial down the buzz, our Thailand specialists can point you toward more peaceful gems like Koh Chang. It’s a short one-hour flight from Bangkok, and it’s worlds away from the city’s hustle. Think jungle-clad hills, laid-back beaches, and the kind of escape that’ll make you forget the chaos exists at all.

9. How much time is needed to see Thailand in its entirety, including Phuket?

Most holiday-makers take advantage of resort deals in one place for their entire stay, and with the beach outside and easy dining just footsteps away, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, if you’re keen to move around, to see the culture-rich area of Chang Mai, or to fly down to Phuket and Samui, you’ll want between 10 days and two weeks to really make the most of it!
